iPod Touch Tricks & Hacks

Some of us just keep waiting for the day when a new Apple firmware will be released,and we just can't wait to download it and have it running on our iPod Touch/iPhone.This post is about the three steps which you need to carry out to have an upgraded and fully loaded iPod Touch/iPhone.

Step one :

Download the latest iPod Touch/iPhone firmware files.But before you restore your already jailbroken iPod Touch/iPhone make sure that the software to jailbreak your new firmware is already available.If its not,then you should wait for a few days before you restore.Make sure you backup your jailbroken apps using AptBackup.Read my post on how to do it.

Step Two:

Well this is the most exciting part.JAILBREAKING..There are a number of softwares available to do that.QuickPWN,WinPWN etc.. to name a few.After jailbreaking you'll have Installer and Cydia on your iPod Touch/iPhone.Read my post on the must have apps after jailbreaking.Make sure you install these apps on the iPod Touch/iPhone.Read my post on How to Jailbreak in 5 mins

Step Three:

Last but not the least,you need to get all the amazing apps from AppStore.But the problem is most of top apps in AppStore are not free.But there is way to get these apps for free.Read my blog on how to get iTunes apps for free.

You need to have iTunes 8.0 installed and iPod Touch 2.1 restore file before you proceed.

1. Before you do anything, make sure you have a jailbroken iPod Touch. SSH into your iPod Touch using and navigate to the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework folder. Find the MobileInstallation file, and download a copy of it to your desktop. You might need this file later in this guide.In my case I didn't need it.Keep it anyways as a backup if something goes wrong.

2. Download iPod Touch 2.1 firmware file, and shift-click restore to install this firmware instead of updating to it.

3. Download QuickPWN 2.1 jailbreak edition using any of the links below:

4. After uncompressing the QuickPWN folder, run QuickPWN.exe, choose the iPod Touch, Browse for your iPod Touch 2.1 firmware file and then click the next button.

5. Installer and Cydia should be checked on this screen, so click next.

6. You should see a message on your screen that says "You are now ready to start the PWNAGE process on your device", make sure your iPod Touch is connected via USB and click next.

7. Follow the on-screen instructions for putting your device in recovery mode.

8. You should see a message that says "The PWNAGE process appears to have completed successfully". Wait for your iPod Touch to reboot.

9. Once your iPod Touch loads to the home screen, you'll notice that Installer and Cydia are there.There you go!!You are done.You have a jailbreaked iPod Touch in 5 mins.Congrats !!


10.If Cydia and Installer are not there. Remember that MobileInstallation file you downloaded in the beginning? In order to install Installer and Cydia you will need to put this file in your iPod Touch.

11. To put the MobileInstallation file in your iPod Touch, download the TotalCommander file from here:

12. You will need the T-Pot plugin for TotalCommander in order to browse files on your iPod Touch. To download and install it, view this page:
http://code.google.com/p/t-pot/wiki/Installation

13. Launch TotalCommander, and navigate to /System/Library/PrivateFrameWorks/MobileInstallation.framework.

14. Replace the MobileInstallation file with the one you downloaded to your Desktop in the beginning.

That's it! You are now on a jailbroken iPod Touch 2.1.

Now its possible to backup your jailbreaked apps from Cydia.

All you need to do is install a software called Aptbackup from Cydia.It makes a list of all the jailbreaked apps you have installed till date.And when you sync your iPhone with iTunes,it stores the list in iTunes backup directory.

Next time you update your firmware and re-jailbreak your iPhone.You just need to install Apt backup.Run it and press restore.

To install:
1.Download and install Total Commander from: http://www.ghisler.com/download.htm

2.Get t-pot. The most recent version at the time of this writing is at: http://code.google.com/p/t-pot/downloads/list

t-pod is a plugin for an application called total commander.

3.Install Total Commander

4.Run Total Commander and open the t-pot.zip file using it.

5.After adding it to Total Commander, close Total Commander, and load it again. T-pot should now be installed.

To use:

1.Connect the iPhone/iTouch via USB.

2.At the top of the two window panes is a drop down menu usually labeled [-c-]. Select Network Neighborhood [--] from it. Choose t-pot from the window pane. You should now be looking at the file system of your iPhone/iTouch. Now you can drag over files from the other window pane to it.

This is specially for those who have recently bought an iPhone/iPod Touch and are hesitating before jailbreaking it.First of all let me tell you that although the iPhone/iPod Touch is a pretty amazing device,it is not half your money's worth is you don't jailbreak it.

And now for the technical aspects.Well that is not very complicated.When we jailbreak an iPhone/iPod Touch only the firmware is modified.And we know it very well how to restore it.So the matter is as simple as that.According to Apple policies if you tamper with the firmware,the warranty becomes void.

And if you need to do any repairs on your iPhone/iPod Touch you can restore you firmware to a non jailbreaked version and your warranty stays intact.But if the problem in your iPhone/iPod Touch is hardware related and there is no way to restore it to the previous state than you can be in a spot of bother.So only thing you need to watch out after jailbreaking is that you don't inflict any kind of physical damage to it so that it becomes unrestorable.

So there is nothing to worry about in jailbreaking.Go ahead and jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch.

The Orkut interface for the iPhone and iPod Touch has been upgraded.Now it has more features and looks similar to the Facebook app found in the App Store.

The new Orkut also has the feature of displaying the updates from various users.This feature was available in the main Orkut page but was missing from the mobile version of the iPhone and iPod Touch.The new Orkut now looks more like an app.It also includes a top navigation bar with has the Home, Scrapbook , Photos and other buttons.

Just imagine how would that be?The Android platform on the iPhone.Relax guys nothing like that has happened till now.But we can't rule it out.But the big question will be can the Android power an iPhone?

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications.Google unveiled the 1st Android phone few days back.Its called the G1.Very soon many other phones supporting the Android platform will be out in the market.

I've seen videos on the G1 and i have to say,though it looks descent,it can't be compared to an iPhone(looks-wise).I would love to get my hand on a G1 to compare it with the iPhone.

At present the G1 has mostly Google related apps.But we should not forget that Android is open source.There is no bar on developing Android apps.Hence we many see some interesting apps very soon.

If anyone finds out a way to run Android apps on the iPhone then nothing like it.I can assure you the moment something like this comes up I'll be one among the first ones to post about it..So keep checking this blog.

This is services/settings app replacement.This is a all in one settings tab for your Network Selection,WiFi,OpenSSH etc.

Boss Tool

This is used to move hard disk space around to allow space for more applications to be insatalled.It moves your fonts,ringtones and other stuff to a different location and makes the root directory free of some useful space.

Customize

Gives you the power of customizing your iPod Touch/iPhone.Everything starting from themes to sliders,wallpapers,icons,bubbles etc can be customized with this application.

OpenSSH

This is the only way you can access the filesystem of your iPhone/iPod Touch.You can copy things like fonts,wallpapers etc.This allows you to crack other applications by changing the file permissions.Changing file permission is very important.When I had jailbreaked my 1.1.4 iPod Touch,I had to change the file permission of the Customize application in order to make it run.

iTunes App Store is turning out to be pretty impressive.Lots of new apps coming up.And now as its possible to crack and use paid iTunes apps for free(learn how),the big question is,whether we should still jailbreak.Well as of now it is necessary to jailbreak as to crack the iPhone or iPod touch to run paid apps we need access to the iPhone file system.But the moment we have a way of getting into the iPhone file system,will it bring an end to jailbreaking?

Some things which you still cant achieve without jailbreaking are...

1.You can't have themes for your iPhone.

2.You can't access the iPhone filesystem

3.You can't run cracked App Store applications

4.You can't change the size of the root partition where your applications are installed.

5.You can't change the way your iPhone looks as in you can't change your sliders,icons,boot images..etc...


Well personally I am not against jailbreaking.I just love the idea of jailbreaking and fully support it.But I feel Apple should stop being so reserved.They should just let go of it.No matter what they do people will always find a way to jailbreak.So why not just let them in rather than resisting.I firmly believe if that is done its going to boost the popularity of the iPhone even more.Thats because there are still many people who are not Tech Savvy,and they are still ignorant about jailbreaking.And even if they discover it from someone they would not like to take the risk of jailbreaking.That leaves them with a pretty dull iPhone.There is so much more you can do with a jailbreaked iPhone.

So in future I would like to see Apple let go of all its restrictions and let people exploit the amazing power of the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

Many of you must be complaining about the price of App Store applications.Obviously who would like to pay for applications...Was it not enough that we spend so much already on buying the iPhone or the iPod touch??But there is always a way out.And that is what I am going to talk about.

Now you can download and install App Store applications for free.Thats right....You don't have to pay a single penny.That is as good as getting access to a free iTunes App Store.

This is how we are going to do it...

PART I
1) Make sure your iPhone/ipod Touch is jailbroken /w 2.0 and iTunes 7.7
2) Open Cydia and install any recommended updates.
3) Install Open SSH.
4) Restart your phone.

PART II
1) SSH into your phone, navigate to the folder: "/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework"
NOTE: MobileInstallation.framework is a FOLDER!
2) Backup the file "MobileFramework" from the directory above.
NOTE: Rename it to MobileFramework.bak (keep it safe)
3) Download this patched file - http://rapidshare.com/files/133118635/MobileInstallation
4) Copy the patched MobileFramework file into the "/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework"
NOTE: MobileInstallation.framework is a FOLDER!
5) Set permissions to that new file to 775
Note: CHECK AGAIN! VERY IMPORTANT!
6) Navigate to "/private/var/mobile/"
7) Set permissions to the folder "Applications" to 777
NOTE: make sure reclusive is checked (meaning it sets all files within the folder to 777)
8) Navigate into the "/private/var/mobile/applications/ folder
9) Create a "Documents" folder in the "/private/var/mobile/applications/" folder.
10) Set the permission to 777
11) Navigate to the root level.
12) Navigate into the "/applications/" folder.
13) Create a "Documents" folder in the "/applications/" folder. Set permission to 777
12) Reboot your iPhone - IMPORTANT! Otherwise Apps will not install!
13) Restart iTunes
14) Download one OFFICIAL App from the app store, if you haven't already.
tip: it can be a free app are fine. Just needs to be an OFFICIAL App.

Part III
1) Simply double click, or drag and drop the .ipa files into iTunes.
2) Sync them with your iPhone!
3) Reboot your phone if the apps do not show up.
4) Enjoy!

How many times have you wished you could transfer music to your iPhone/iPod Touch without using iTunes,just like any other music player available in the market.??It is now finally possible to do so.

This is one of the features which is missed most on all the iPods.Not only the iPhone/iPod Touch.Its so much easier to just copy all the files you need on your music player rather than open iTunes,add songs to library and then sync..blah blah blah...This is sometimes the only thing which makes iPods very irritating,But now we can overcome this by using an application called Air Sharing.

6.You can now see your iPhone/iPod Touch in your Network Places(when your are connected by WiFi)

7.Just copy the files into the iPhone network place and your are all set.

The best feature is that after copying the files to your iPod Touch you can delete the files directly from your iPod Touch or iPhone.This is such a relief.Previously if we had to delete any file we had to again plug in the iPod Touch or iPhone to a PC,load iTunes and than remove the file from library.This application infact makes the iPod Touch/iPhone superiour to other mp3 players in the way that in none of them you can delete music directly from the device.

So all you need to do is copy all the music you want.Keep the ones you love and delete the unwanted ones from your iPod Touch/iPhone.

Another interesting feature is you can organise the music you have copied using this application into various folders like you do in your PC

Each category has various phrases...and here is the best part.The iPhone/iPod Touch reads it aloud,so can you can be sure of the pronunciation.

Apart from being an excellent translator tool it can also be used for learning the basics of various languages.I would say this is a must have app on your iPhone when you are going abroad...

Did you know an amazing feature of the iPod touch and iPhone.You can read pdf files,word and excel documents and various other file formats on it.But for that you require to have a jailbroken ipod touch or iphone.

This is what you need to do....

1.You have to have Cydia installed on your iPod touch or iPhone.

2.Open cydia..select the search option.

3.Then look for the application called Docs.Install that application.

4.Now that you have done that you have to transfer the pdf files and the other files to your iPod touch or iPhone.

5.You need to have OpenSSh installed,install it from cydia.

6.Now you have to install WinSCP on your desktop.

7.SSH into your iPod Touch or iPhone and put the files in /mobile/Documents.

8.Set the permission on the Documents folder as 0755.

1. Download a bunch of stuff.

* Download WinPwn
* Download the firmware. iPhone 3G firmware 2.0.1 here and iPhone first gen.
The iPod Touch firmware must be purchased legally using iTunes
* Download the latest version of iTunes here

2. Get everything ready

* Get your iPod/iPhone running firmware 2.0.1. Plug your device in and hold shift and click restore in iTunes and click your firmware
* Before instaalling WinPwn, make sure you remove any other copies of WinPwn on your computer. Only worry about this if you have ever installed previous versions of WinPwn on your computer.
* Install WinPwn

3. Starting WinPwn

* Run the WinPwn program
* Click “Browse .ipsw”
* Select the firmware file that you are currently running (should be 2.0.1)

4. Create custom firmware

* Now click “IPSW BUILDER”
* A new screen will pop up. The first tab shows thae applications to install. I recommend installing all of them. Cydia an alternative to Installer. Since Installer is now in a beta stage, Cydia will be much needed. The YouTube fix is a just in case
* Go to the “Custom Images” tab
* Select the images that you would like for your device
* Don’t worry about the other two tabs
* Click “Build .ipsw” and save your new firmware to your desktop (its easier to find later)
* Wait for it to be created

5. Pwn iTunes

* In WinPwn, click “iPwner”
* Select the firmware file you just created and saved to your desktop
* Wait for WinPwn to say “iTunes has been pwned. You can now restore your ipsw using DFU mode

6. Get your device in DFU mode.

* Turn the volume on your computer up
* Turn your iPod off
* Hold power and home for ten seconds (one thousand one, one thousand two…)
* Let go of the power button while still holding the home button
* Listen and keep holding home until you hear your computer ddo the USB beep (do dO)
* Let go of home
* Your device should show up in iTunes in DFU mode. Your device’s screen should be blank (if it has the “connect to iTunes logo”, turn it off and try again)

7. Restore with your custon firmware

* In iTunes, hold shift and click restore
* Select the custom firmware you created
* Wait while iTunes restores your newly pwned device

8. Final touches

* On your iPod/iPhone, go to Settings, General, Auto-Lock, and set it to 5 minutes
* Go to Cydia and let it install its updates and such
* Go to Sections, All Packages, and select BossTool and install it
* Once installed, exit Cydia and open BossTool
* Move the fonts. This might take a while, but just wait until it says “Fonts Already Moved”
* Open Cydia, Go to Manage, click BossTool, select Modify, and remove it

9. If you want to deal with Installer

* Open Installer and go to categories and select sources. Install Community Sources
* If this doesn’t work, go to the sources tab and try to refresh the source there
* Keep checking Installer and wait for updates and a version that isn’t beta.

This tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPod touch. It has been updated for the 2.0.1 firmware and the inclusion of the Installer.app beta.

If you have a iPod touch make sure you have iTunes 7.7 and continue...

Step One
Make a folder called "Pwnage" on the desktop. In it, you will need a couple of things. Pwnage 2.0.2, found here

You will also need the 2.0.1 iPod firmware.

When downloading the IPSW file, it is best to download it with Firefox!



Step Two
Double click to launch PwnageTool 2.0.2.




Click Ok if presented with a warning.

Step Three
Click to select Expert Mode from the top menu bar

Step Four
Click to select your iPod touch. A check-mark will appear over the image of the phone.


Step Five
Click the blue arrow button to continue. You will be brought to the "Browse for IPSW" page. On my laptop, it automatically found the IPSW. If PwnageTool doesn't automatically find the ipsw file you can click Browse for IPSW....



Click to select the found IPSW file, a checkmark will appear next to it. Then click the blue arrow button to continue.



Step Six
You will then be brought to a menu with 7 choices. Click to select General then click the blue arrow button.



The General settings allows you to decide the partition size. Click to Disable partition wipe-out then click the blue arrow button.



The Bootneuter settings are greyed out for the iPod touch. Click the blue arrow button.



The Cydia settings menu allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install the necessary them later.




Click to select the Download packages tab. Then click the Refresh button to display all the available packages. Double clicking the package you want will download it and make it available in the Select Packages tab.



Checkmark the ones you want then Click the blue arrow button.



The Custom Packages Settings menu displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. For know leave these settings as is. Click the blue arrow button to continue.



The Custom Logos Settings menu allows you to add your own images as boot logos. Click the Browse button to select your Boot logo and Recovery logo.



Click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step Seven
You are now ready to begin the pwnage process! Click the Build button to select it then click the Blue arrow button to begin.





Step Eight
You will be asked to save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to your Pwnage folder you created on your Desktop.



Your IPSW is now being built. Please allow up to 10 minutes.



You will be asked to enter your administrator password. Do this then click the OK button.

When prompted if your iPod touch has been Pwned before, we clicked No. It allows for a more thorough restore.



You will be asked to turn off the device. Make sure it is connected to the USB port.



Step Nine
Be ready to follow directions now. It will ask you to hold the home button and the power button for 10 seconds. Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds to enter DFU.



If you fail, it will show you a message. Click Yes. Unplug the iPhone from the USB. Turn it off, then turn it back on. Plug it back into the USB and turn off the iPhone when prompted.



When done correctly, Pwnage 2.0 will display a message telling your that it successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes will also pop-up.





Step Ten
In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option button and click Restore.



Step Eleven
Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop using the dialog window that appears. Select the custom IPSW that was created (iPod1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Custom_Restore.ipsw) and click the Open button.



Step Twelve
iTunes will now restore the firmware on your iPod touch. This can also take up to 10 minutes.



Step Thirteen
Once the restore is completed your iPod touch will reboot and you will notice Cydia is present on the SpringBoard!

All you need to do is drop in at a select Vodafone Store between August 20 and 21 and confirm your booking by paying Rs 10000 through cash or credit card.

If you are not an existing Vodafone customer, you will need a Vodafone connection for your iPhone 3G.
